Proposed update, not in effect yet. Until then the current version applies.

Applies to: StitchWing for Windows and macOS

This is the agreement between you and Lite Work Designs LLC, 14502 Greenview Dr Ste 500 #1159, Laurel, MD 20708, United States, about using the StitchWing software. Everywhere below that says "we" or "us" means that company, and that address is the one to write to.

Buying is covered by the Terms. Your information is covered by Privacy. The open-source components inside StitchWing are listed under Open-source notices and keep their own licenses.

Oversized imports from other programs. On Free, an imported chart bigger than the Free chart-size limit opens to view only: no editing, printing, exporting, sharing or copying. Saving that import as a .stitchwing file does not remove the restriction. Charts made in StitchWing still open, display and print, even above the Free size limit, with no account, license or internet connection. The current Free limits are shown on the pricing page and in the app; no limit is set by this paragraph.

Your patterns remain yours. This exception does not restrict your ownership or use of your patterns outside StitchWing. The file-opening and printing statements below refer to charts made in StitchWing; oversized imports have the view-only exception above.

The promise underneath everything else

A pattern made in StitchWing opens, displays and prints. Always.

No account. No license. No internet connection. It doesn't matter whether your subscription has lapsed, your license was refunded or suspended, you've been offline for a year, or we can't reach our own servers. Double-click the file and it opens. Look at it. Print it.

If a pattern made in StitchWing uses something your plan doesn't include — a friend sends you one made with a feature you don't have — it still opens, displays and prints. Only editing with that feature is locked.

We will never delete, encrypt, hold or lock your pattern files. They're on your computer and they're yours. We made the app so that opening a file never even asks who you are.

The rest of the short version

  • Your patterns belong to you. Sell them, give them away, teach from them — on every plan, including free. No royalties, no credit required.
  • Several computers at a time. The number is on your plan. Any mix of Windows and Mac. Swap one out whenever you like.
  • Signing in is all there is. Type your email and password in the app and it works out what you own. No activation codes, no "use license" button, no trip to a website.
  • It works offline. Sign in once; after that the app keeps going offline for the grace period on your plan and quietly re-checks when you're back online.
  • Only Monthly and Yearly get new features. A one-time "Own It" license keeps every feature that existed on the day you bought, or on release day if you pre-ordered, plus maintenance fixes for as long as we support StitchWing for desktop.
  • You can bring your own files in from other programs. Files you already own, that you made, are yours to import.
  • Don't share or sell your key, and don't crack the app. That's about it.

1. Your license

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use StitchWing as this agreement and your plan allow. Non-exclusive means we license it to other people too. Non-transferable means you can't sell your license or hand it to someone else.

We keep ownership of the StitchWing software and the content we ship with it. You keep ownership of everything you make — see "Your patterns are yours" below.

You accept this agreement when you agree to it while creating your account or at checkout. If you use the free version without an account, this agreement still sets out what you may and may not do with StitchWing. If you don't agree to it, please don't install or use StitchWing.

2. Your account, and signing in

You don't need an account to use the free version. To use a plan you've bought, you sign in with your StitchWing account, and you confirm your email address before you can sign in. The Terms describe how that works.

Signing in verifies your license. When you type your email and password in the app, the server tells the app who you are and what you own, in the same step. If you own a plan, the app shows it. If you don't, it says so and offers to take you to the site. There's no separate activation to do.

3. Computers, and how seats work

Your license covers a number of computers at once — the number is shown on your plan. Any mix of Windows and Mac: one purchase works on either, at the same price, and PCs and Macs count together toward that limit. There is no desktop free trial.

Signing in claims a seat on the computer you're using. To tell computers apart, StitchWing turns the identifier your operating system already has for the machine into a one-way code on your computer, before anything is sent. We never receive or store the real identifier. Alongside it we keep the name you've given that computer (it starts as something generic like "Windows PC"), the operating system, the app version and when it was last seen.

When every seat is in use, we say so. You'll see the computers currently on your license and you can free one there and then, on the spot, without typing your password again. A seat limit is a conversation, never a silent failure.

Removing a computer takes one press on your account page. The seat is free immediately, and that computer is signed out of your account too, so it can't keep using the license. We email you whenever a computer is removed.

Who may use your license: you, and people who live in your household. It isn't for sharing with friends, a guild, a class or coworkers. Ask us about multi-user licenses.

We may step in if we see a license being switched between computers unusually often in a way that looks like key sharing.

4. Working offline

Sign in once on a computer and StitchWing keeps working offline for the grace period shown on your plan. When you're online again it re-checks quietly, and you don't have to do anything.

If the grace runs out while you're still offline, the app doesn't forget you. It knows which account this computer belongs to and asks for that password — it doesn't ask who you are all over again. And while you sort it out, your files still open, display and print (see the top of this page).

Each re-check sends proof that this computer is signed in — nothing about your patterns, ever. Privacy sets out exactly what's sent.

5. What each plan includes

The features, limits and prices of each plan are whatever the pricing page and checkout showed at the time you bought. They're all on the pricing page today.

  • Free: free with no end date and no card, with the limits shown on the pricing page. StitchWing tells you at the moment you reach a limit, and what lifts it. A limit is never allowed to look like a bug.
  • Monthly and Yearly: every current feature, plus every new feature as it ships. These are the only plans that get new features.
  • One-time ("Own It"): every feature that existed on the day you bought it (or on release day, if you pre-ordered), and maintenance updates for the life of StitchWing for desktop. Features released after that day appear marked and locked, with an upgrade offer — never silently missing. A maintenance update means security fixes, fixes for crashes and data loss, fixes to keep StitchWing running on new versions of Windows and macOS, and fixes to features you already own. It doesn't mean new tools, modes, templates or content.
  • Templates are sold one at a time in the Template Store and are not part of any plan.

We won't take back what you've paid for. We won't move a feature you already have behind a higher plan or into a paid template, and we won't ship an update that removes a feature a one-time owner paid for.

Everyone runs the same build of the app and gets every update. What you can use depends on your plan, not on which version you installed.

5a. Gifted licenses

A gift is a prepaid license for the plan and term bought by its giver, governed by the gift Terms. Monthly and Yearly gifts do not renew automatically; an independently purchased subscription keeps its own renewal choice. The dates are shown before redemption, with gifted time added after existing paid time where applicable. An Own It gift keeps the edition recorded when the giver bought it, with that edition's features and maintenance promises, not the edition current on redemption day.

You accept this agreement when you confirm redemption into your signed-in, confirmed account. Giving someone an unused gift code is allowed; it is not a transfer of an existing license. Once redeemed, the license belongs to that account and the non-transferable license rules above apply. Gift refunds are handled through support under the gift Terms, including a giver's qualifying request after redemption without recipient approval. A refund ends only gift-funded access. Separate purchases remain, and every pattern file still opens, displays and prints under the promise at the top of this page.

6. Your patterns are yours

  • You own what you make. We claim no ownership of it and no license to it.
  • Use it however you like, including commercially. Sell patterns on Etsy, Ravelry or your own shop. Sell the things you make. Teach from them. Publish them. You don't owe us royalties and you don't need to credit StitchWing — though we'd love it if you did. This is true on every plan, including free.
  • We don't see them. Your patterns stay on your computer. Nothing in StitchWing uploads them unless you choose to attach one to a problem report; then we use it only to fix that problem, and delete it 90 days after we close the report.
  • Other people's rights still apply. If you bring in a photo or artwork, or chart a character, a logo or someone else's design, you need the right to use it. StitchWing doesn't give you rights to anything you import. And if someone shares a pattern with you, being able to open it doesn't mean you may resell it.
  • Your own files, your own business. You may open, read and convert your own StitchWing files, with your own tools if you like.

7. Bringing in files from other programs

StitchWing can read pattern files made by some other charting and embroidery programs so you can bring your own work across. That's what the feature is for.

  • You're responsible for having the right to the pattern you're importing. Importing someone else's pattern doesn't make it yours.
  • We read the file and write our own; we never ship anything taken out of anyone else's software. Their symbols, their bundled patterns, their alphabets and their borders are theirs, and you won't find them in StitchWing.
  • If a file turns out to be encrypted rather than simply undocumented, StitchWing stops and says so instead of trying to get around it.

8. Content that comes with StitchWing

What you may do: use our stitch symbols, size shortcuts, catalogues, PDF themes and any templates you've bought in your own patterns and projects — including patterns you sell or give away, and the finished items you make. You may include StitchWing's stitch symbols in the PDFs you share.

What you may not do: sell, share or give away that content on its own or as a collection — our alphabets, motifs, borders or templates published as a chart pack, a font or a template library, for instance — or use it to build something that competes with StitchWing.

Sizes are guides. Size shortcuts and templates use standard measurements for convenience. They aren't official standards and they don't guarantee fit.

Colours are approximate. Yarn and thread brand names, colour names and colour numbers belong to their owners. We use them only to identify products, and that doesn't mean those companies endorse StitchWing. What you see on screen and what comes out of your printer will differ from the real yarn — buy a sample if the exact shade matters.

9. Estimates are estimates

StitchWing works out charts, written instructions, yardage, skein counts, sizes and colours automatically. Check them. Buy extra yarn from the same dye lot where you can. If you publish or sell a pattern, testing it is on you.

10. Things you agree not to do

  • Share, sell, publish or give away your license key, or let people outside your household use it.
  • Get around activation, seat limits or feature locks.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble StitchWing — except where the law specifically allows it regardless of what this agreement says. Opening and converting your own pattern files is always allowed, as "Your patterns are yours" above sets out.
  • Rent, lease or resell access to StitchWing, or run it as a service for other people.
  • Remove copyright, trademark or license notices.
  • Use StitchWing to break the law or infringe someone else's rights.

11. Open-source components

StitchWing includes open-source and third-party components, each covered by its own license. The full list and the license texts are under Open-source notices, and in the app under Help → About. Where one of those licenses gives you more rights over a particular component, those rights win for that component.

"StitchWing" and the StitchWing logo are our trademarks.

12. When a license ends

You can stop using StitchWing whenever you like. Cancelling a subscription is in the Terms.

We may end or suspend a paid license if you share or sell your key, if you seriously break one of the promises under "Things you agree not to do" above, if there's payment fraud, if a purchase is refunded, or while a chargeback is being decided. Where the problem can be put right we'll email you first and give you 14 days to put it right before we do anything.

What happens then: When a subscription ends, including cancellation at the end of the paid period or a failed payment after the grace period shown in your plan terms, you return to Free with Free editing and limits, unless you also own an edition outright, in which case you keep the features of that edition. A refund, revocation or paused/disputed license puts the paid tools and associated add-on packs on hold and returns you to Free with Free editing and limits. This applies when the app learns of the change. For an ordinary subscription end, paid editing tools already available inside an open chart remain available until you close and reopen that chart or restart the app; menus and output dialogs use your current license. A refund, revocation or dispute removes paid access even inside an open chart. Your files are not deleted or changed. You keep every pattern file, and the promise at the top of this page still holds. A license suspended for a dispute comes back automatically if the dispute is decided in our favour.

What outlasts the agreement: the files-never-lock promise, your ownership of your patterns, your right to keep using our content that's already inside patterns you've made, and the limits on liability below.

13. What we promise, and what we don't

What we promise. For 30 days after you pay, or after your start date if you pre-ordered (see the Terms), StitchWing will work substantially as described on stitchwing.com on a computer that meets the stated requirements. If it doesn't and we can't fix it, we'll refund you — the Terms, under "Refunds", set out how, including the longer 90-day window for a computer StitchWing simply won't run on.

What we don't promise. Apart from the promises in this agreement, StitchWing is provided as it is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim other warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, and we don't promise StitchWing will be error-free or never interrupted.

Limits on our liability. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim about StitchWing is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or US$100. We set that floor deliberately above the price of every plan we sell, so the limit can never leave you with less than everything you paid us. We aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost profits or sales, the cost of yarn or materials, or lost data. Keep backups.

That limit doesn't apply to death or injury caused by our negligence, to fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or to anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit. Nothing here takes away a right your own consumer law gives you.

14. Changes to this agreement

We may update this agreement. If a change materially reduces your rights, we'll email you or tell you in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. Changes will never:

  • take away features you've already paid for;
  • shrink the maintenance promise for a purchase already made;
  • restrict what you may do with your own patterns; or
  • weaken the promise at the top of this page.

If you're a subscriber and you don't accept a change, cancel before it takes effect.

15. Which law applies, and where a disagreement goes

This agreement is governed by the law of the United States and of the State of Maryland, where we're based, without applying its conflict-of-laws rules. If something can't be sorted out between us, it goes to the state or federal courts sitting in Maryland, and we both accept that as a proper place for it.

Two deliberate exceptions, the same ones as in the Terms:

  • Small claims is always open to you. If your claim fits the small-claims court where you live, bring it there instead. We won't object to that.
  • If you live in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, nothing here takes away the protection of your own country's consumer law, or your right to bring a claim in the courts where you live.

There is no forced arbitration here, and no class-action waiver. We considered both and decided against them.

16. The rest

  • Whole agreement. This license agreement, the Terms and the Privacy page are the whole agreement between us about StitchWing.
  • Severability. If part of this can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If the business changes hands, we may transfer this agreement, and we'll require the new owner to honour existing one-time licenses and the promises in this document.
  • No waiver. Not enforcing something straight away doesn't mean we've given it up.
  • Notices go to your account email or appear in the app.
  • Language. If this is translated, the English version is the one that governs.
  • Export. You agree to use StitchWing in line with export-control and sanctions law, and confirm you're not somewhere that law forbids us to supply.
