Baby Animal Hats: Bear, Bunny & Cat

Make a soft crochet earflap hat for your baby, with bear, bunny or cat ears, in six sizes from newborn to 24 months. The flaps end in short, flat straps that close under the chin with a pressed snap, so there are no ties anywhere. Choose the ears you like, or leave them off for a plain earflap hat. Each size comes as a chart you can recolour and change, with a written round and row to match every line of it.
You'll need:
- Sport or baby weight yarn in two colours: soft, smooth cotton or a washable blend (about 80 to 160 yards, by size and by animal; the table below gives each size)
- A 3.75 mm (US F-5) crochet hook, or the size that gives you the gauge
- Two pressed (no-sew) snap sets for each hat, about 1/2 inch across, and the setting tool made for them
- A yarn needle, stitch markers and scissors
Important Safety Notes
Hats: Hats are for outdoors and for moments when an adult is watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against hats on babies indoors once home from the hospital, and never for sleep.
Sewn-on pieces: Sew ears, flowers, bows and similar pieces on along their whole base with doubled yarn, never with a few stitches. Tug each piece firmly in every direction; if it moves, sew it again or leave it off.
Nothing dangling: Do not add pompoms, tassels, fringe, ribbons or bows.
Snaps, not buttons: Close this item with pressed (no-sew) snaps made for baby clothes, set with the tool made for them. Do not use buttons. Before every wear, tug each snap firmly in every direction; if one loosens, stop using the item.
Chin strap: Close the snap so the strap lies flat under the chin with room for two fingers. If it presses or leaves a mark, use the roomier snap position or the next size up. Never leave a baby alone wearing it.
No cords or ties: This item has no cords, ties, ribbons or drawstrings anywhere, especially at the neck, hood, face or waist. Do not add any.
Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.
If you sell what you make: Children's products sold in the US must meet CPSC rules, including testing, a Children's Product Certificate and a tracking label. Start at cpsc.gov.
