Baby Bibs

Baby Bibs finished item, front view; source picture, illustration.
Front · Digital preview

Make a soft, absorbent crochet bib that closes with snaps at the back of the neck. There are no ties and no cords: a snap stud on one end of the neck band and two sockets on the other let you choose a snugger or a roomier neck.

The pattern has three sizes, Newborn, Baby and Toddler, each with its own chart and a written row for every row. The body is a rounded shape made for your own design, and a small heart is charted as an example. Open the file in StitchWing to change the colours or to chart your own motif or a name.

It is worked in single crochet from the hem up, in fine cotton. The ends of the neck band fold back, so every snap goes through two layers of cloth.

You'll need:

  • Soft, smooth, washable fine (weight 2) cotton yarn in three colours: dusty blue, oat and rose (only a few yards of the rose)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook, or the size that gives you the gauge
  • 3 plastic snap sets, size 20 (about 1/2 in), made for baby clothes, and the setting tool made for them
  • A yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure

Important Safety Notes

Bibs: Use at meals with an adult present, and take the bib off when the meal is done. Never leave a bib on a baby for sleep or unattended play.

Snaps, not buttons: Close this item with pressed (no-sew) snaps made for baby clothes, set with the tool made for them. Do not use buttons. Before every wear, tug each snap firmly in every direction; if one loosens, stop using the item.

No cords or ties: This item has no cords, ties, ribbons or drawstrings anywhere, especially at the neck, hood, face or waist. Do not add any.

No small parts: Do not add buttons, beads, plastic eyes, charms or bells. Make faces and details in embroidery stitched through the fabric, and tug them firmly before use.

Check the neck: With the bib fastened, two fingers must slide easily between the neck band and the baby's neck. Use the larger neck loop if it is snug, and never force the bib on.

Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.

If you sell what you make: Children's products sold in the US must meet CPSC rules, including testing, a Children's Product Certificate and a tracking label. Start at cpsc.gov.
