Little Moon Birth Announcement Hanging

Make a keepsake for the nursery wall with your baby's name, birth date, weight and length worked in as lettering. A soft sage frame holds a cream field with a little crescent moon, stars and a heart. Type your four lines into StitchWing and the chart is lettered for you: nothing to draw by hand.

The name can be up to 11 letters, and a long one is set a little smaller to fit. The date is written out in full, like March 8, 2026, so it reads the same everywhere. Weight and length are your own words, so 7 lb 8 oz and 20 in work as well as 3.4 kg and 51 cm. Keep the moon and stars, move them, or clear the field and chart your own design.

It is all single crochet in four colours, worked flat from the bottom up. The file has the chart and written rows with the stitch count checked on every row; the rows that hold your words you read from your own chart. The top finishes in a pocket for a wooden dowel, so the hanging comes down for washing. There are no ties, tassels, fringe or buttons to add.

You'll need:

• Soft, smooth, washable sport weight yarn (category 2) in four colours: sage, cream, light blue-grey and slate blue
• A 3.5 mm crochet hook, or the size that gives you the gauge
• A smooth, unpainted wooden dowel about 3/8 in thick and 22 in long, and two small wall pegs or hooks with an upturned tip or lip
• A yarn needle, scissors, and a few small bobbins or short lengths of yarn for the moon, stars and heart

Gauge: 20 single crochet and 22 rows = 4 inches, washed and blocked. Make and wash a swatch first. Size: one chart, 90 stitches x 100 rows, about 18 x 18 in at gauge, plus the pocket. Within half an inch at gauge. A finer or heavier yarn makes the same chart smaller or larger: about 15 x 15 in at 24 stitches and 26 rows per 4 in, about 22 x 22 in at 16 stitches and 18 rows.

Important Safety Notes#

Hanging decor: Hang high on a wall, out of reach of children and away from cribs and beds. Rest the dowel on two pegs or hooks fixed firmly into the wall, with an upturned tip or lip so the dowel cannot roll or slide off. This hanging needs no cord: do not add one.

Decor only: This is for decoration. Do not put it in a crib, bed, play yard or car seat, and do not give it to a baby or child to play with.

Dowel: Use a smooth, unpainted wooden dowel with the ends sanded and nothing fitted over them. Take it out before washing and put it back only when the hanging is dry.

Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.
