Make soft crochet pants or close-fitting leggings for your baby, in seven sizes from newborn to 24 months. Both pull on: there are no snaps, ties, buttons or elastic anywhere. The waistband is a soft ribbed band that stretches over a diaper, the seat has extra room for one, and the back sits a little higher than the front. Each leg ends in a ribbed cuff that is never tight at the ankle.

Each size comes as charts for the two front legs and the two back legs, which you can recolour and change, with a written row to match every line of them. The sample has a small star on each front leg: keep it, move it or draw your own. The waistband, the cuffs and the making up are written out in full.

You'll need:

  • Sport or baby weight yarn (Craft Yarn Council weight 2): smooth, soft, washable cotton or a washable blend. About 195 to 470 yards depending on the size and style (see the table); the waistband and cuffs use a second colour
  • A 3.75 mm (US F-5) crochet hook, or the size that gives you the gauge
  • A yarn needle, stitch markers and scissors

Important Safety Notes

No cords or ties: This item has no cords, ties, ribbons or drawstrings anywhere, especially at the neck, hood, face or waist. Do not add any.

Check the fit: The neck must slip over the baby's head easily or open wide on snaps, and waistbands, leg openings and cuffs must never be tight.

Room for the legs: Keep room for the legs to bend up and out. Never add a tight band around the thighs.

Everyday wear: Made as everyday clothing, not sleepwear. Children's sleepwear has separate flammability rules (16 CFR 1615 and 1616).

Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.
