Little Clouds Sleep Sack

A wearable blanket to crochet for a baby from newborn to 6 months. Larger sizes are coming soon. It goes over your baby's own sleepwear, in place of a loose blanket.
The design is a soft cream sack with a sage hem and three blue-grey clouds on the front. Keep the clouds, move them, or clear the front and chart your own picture, an initial or a name.
It has no hood, no zip, no ties and no cord. It closes with four pressed snaps, two on each shoulder. The neck and armholes are shaped for each size, so make the size that fits your baby now, never a bigger one to grow into.
One purchase gives you Newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months now, with 6-9, 9-12 and 12-18 months added to the same purchase when they are ready. Each size has its own front and back chart, written rows checked against the chart, finished measurements and a PDF you can print. Open the file in StitchWing to change colours or chart your own design.
Worked flat in single crochet in DK weight cotton or a soft cotton blend. You will need a hook of about 4.0 mm, four pressed (no-sew) snaps made for baby clothes, and the tool that sets them. Yarn amounts are estimates, so weigh your swatch: about 420 to 620 yd for the newborn size, up to 730 to 1,070 yd for 18 months.
Pictures are digital illustrations of the 6-month size.
Important Safety Notes
Sleep sack: The American Academy of Pediatrics lists a wearable blanket as the alternative to loose blankets. Keep the neck and armholes snug so a baby cannot slide down inside, make no hood, and never cover the head. Dress the baby in one more layer than an adult would need, because overheating raises risk.
Worn over sleepwear: This sack goes over your baby's own clothes or sleepwear, never over a bare baby in only a diaper.
Neck and armholes: Make the size for your baby's height and weight, never a bigger one to grow into. If the neck can be pulled up over the baby's mouth or nose, or the baby can slide down inside, stop using it. Never add a hood.
Sleepwear rules: Garments made for sleep are children's sleepwear and have their own US flammability rules (16 CFR 1615 and 1616). A pattern is not a garment, but if you sell sleep sacks you make, read the CPSC's children's sleepwear guidance first.
Snaps, not buttons: Close this item with pressed (no-sew) snaps made for baby clothes, set with the tool made for them. Do not use buttons. Before every wear, tug each snap firmly in every direction; if one loosens, stop using the item.
Room for the legs: Keep room for the legs to bend up and out. Never add a tight band around the thighs.
Nothing added: Do not add weights, beads, rice or any filling, and do not use the sack to swaddle.
Close stitches: Work a firm, closely stitched fabric. Gaps and lacy openings can catch small fingers and toes.
Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.
If you sell what you make: Children's products sold in the US must meet CPSC rules, including testing, a Children's Product Certificate and a tracking label. Start at cpsc.gov.
