Knit Fitted Crib Sheet

Knit a fitted crib sheet in smooth stockinette, made to fit a full-size crib mattress snugly. The top is worked flat with a charted moon-and-stars motif that you can change, and the sides are picked up and knitted in the round down to a hem with enclosed elastic. Choose the size for a mattress up to 5 or up to 6 inches thick, with a written row for every row. Always check the fit on your own mattress before use.
You'll need:
- Fine (sport weight) cotton or cotton-rich yarn in sage, cream and butter; this is a large project that needs well over a thousand yards
- Circular needles to match gauge (about 3.25 to 3.75 mm), 60 in (150 cm) long
- 3/8 in (10 mm) soft, non-roll, latex-free elastic (112 in / 284 cm), a yarn needle, a bodkin and removable stitch markers
Important Safety Notes
Crib sheet: Make it for a full-size crib mattress and check that it fits tightly: lift each corner and tug, and it must stay on. Use a fitted sheet alone in the sleep area, with no other bedding, toys, blankets or bumpers. Stop using it at the first hole, thin spot or loose stitch.
Elastic: Use soft, non-roll, latex-free elastic that stays fully enclosed in the hem, so no end, loop or piece can come out. Stop using the item if elastic shows, frays or goes slack.
Yarn and care: Use soft, smooth, washable yarn that does not shed or fuzz, and wash a swatch first. Weave in every end and check inside the finished item for loose strands, which can wrap around a baby's fingers or toes. Wash inside out.
Close stitches: Work a firm, closely stitched fabric. Gaps and lacy openings can catch small fingers and toes.
If you sell what you make: Children's products sold in the US must meet CPSC rules, including testing, a Children's Product Certificate and a tracking label. Start at cpsc.gov.
