Where your charts are saved

Save the chart you want to keep. Find your files, choose a folder and recover work after an interruption.

A chart is saved when you save it

Press Save on a new chart and choose its name and folder. Cancel saves nothing. Later Saves update the same file. A recovery copy helps after an interruption; use Save to keep the pattern.

StitchWing also keeps a recovery copy in case it closes unexpectedly. It isn’t a saved chart and doesn’t count toward the free limit: see If StitchWing closes unexpectedly.

Closing a chart, or StitchWing, with unsaved work asks Save, Don't save or Cancel. Don't save discards the unsaved changes and their recovery copy; a saved file stays as it was. Cancel leaves the chart open.

The Save button and its status

The Save button beside the chart name saves the current chart. Not saved yet means this new chart has no saved file. Unsaved changes means your latest work has not been saved. Saving… means you should wait for saving to finish. Saved means your current work is saved in the chart file.

If the status is Save failed, the button becomes Retry. Try again, or use the save warning's Save somewhere else… to choose another folder. Do not close with Don't save if you want to keep these changes. See When a folder cannot save.

If you make another change while saving, that newer work remains unsaved. Save again before closing the chart or quitting StitchWing.

Where

New charts go into Documents\StitchWing on your PC (on a Mac, the StitchWing folder inside Documents). Each chart is one file ending in .stitchwing, and double-clicking one opens it in StitchWing.

To use another folder, open Settings (the gear), find New charts are saved in, and press Change….

A copy under another name

File › Save as… makes a copy under a new name or in another folder. It's titled Save a copy as.

Pictures and PDFs

A .stitchwing file is your working chart. To share or print it, use Print / Export to save a PDF or a picture. See Print a chart or save a PDF.

Free version

The free version’s saved pattern limit is 1, with charts up to 100 × 100. A chart counts once you save it.
