Colors and real yarn

Match any color in your chart to a real yarn shade, with its name and number. The yarn library is in the free version; matching your own skein from a photo comes with the paid plans.

Follow along, or read the steps below. Turn captions on in the player if you want them.

Match a color to a yarn

Open the Color panel for a color in your chart and go to the Yarn tab.

  • A color of your own says Not matched to a yarn and has Match to a yarn…. StitchWing lists the closest shades first.
  • A color that's already a real shade shows its card: name, number, line, weight and skein size. Change shade… shows the closest shades in plain words (very close, close) and every shade in the line.
  • Use my own color instead turns it back into a color of your own.

If you pick a shade that's already in your chart, the two colors become one. One Undo puts them back.

Use your own yarn colors

To add a custom color and record your yarn’s details, follow Use your own yarn colors.

From a photo

In the photo wizard's Colors step, switch on Match to real yarn and every color becomes a shade you can buy. See Turn a photo into a chart.

What to buy

The Materials page of your printout or PDF lists each shade with its line and shade number. A few makers don't publish shade numbers; for those StitchWing shows the store's item number and says so.

Colors are approximate

Screens and printers show yarn colors differently, so check a real skein before you buy. Yarn brand names belong to their owners. Is a shade wrong or missing? Tell us through the contact form.
