How much yarn, and dye lots

Materials and cost estimates yarn and thread amounts, with manual whole-project skeins for filet. Keep your dye lots in My yarn and StitchWing tells you when one lot won't cover a color.

How much yarn

Open Colors › Materials and cost…, or press Yarn needed in the side panel's Chart section. Supported automatic estimates give each color its yarn in whole skeins, from each yarn's skein size. Filet uses the manual whole-project amount described below.

  • With your swatch. Choose My swatch and type how much yarn a small swatch used and how many stitches (or tiles) it has. Or use Measure my swatch… to read your gauge from a photo beside a ruler, and tick Also measure yarn used. This is the closest figure you can get.
  • Before you've made a swatch. For crochet in single, half double or double crochet, standard C2C tiles, Tunisian simple stitch and knitting, StitchWing shows a typical figure for your yarn weight, marked Estimate. Everyone's tension is different, so press Measure my swatch when you can. Granny squares, mosaic and mini C2C tiles need your own swatch.

Automatic estimates add an extra for tails, which you can change. Buy a little to spare.

Filet: one yarn for the whole project

Filet uses one yarn for the whole project, so automatic totals aren’t available. Set Whole-project skeins (set by you) in Materials and cost; it stays with the project.

Cross-stitch thread estimates

Cross-stitch estimates cover full crosses, fractional stitches and backstitch from your fabric count and strands. Allow extra for knots, beads and travel between lines.

Dye lots in My yarn

Skeins from one dye lot match. Skeins from another lot can show as a stripe. In My yarn, press ⋯ beside a yarn and choose Dye lots…:

  1. Type the lot number from the label.
  2. Set how many skeins of that lot you have. Press Add a lot for another one.
  3. Press Save.

The yarn's row then shows its lots, for example Lot 4521 · 3 skeins. Press that line to change them. Every change has Undo.

When one lot won't cover a color

Materials and cost shows each yarn's lot beside its skeins. When a color needs more skeins than one lot holds, it says so plainly, for example: Needs 5 skeins; you have 3 from lot 4521, so buy 2 more of the same lot if you can. If you have enough in total but spread over two lots, it suggests which lot to add to, or changing lots where it won't show.

On the printout

The Materials page has a Lot # column. When My yarn has lots for a color in the chart, Lot numbers from My yarn in Print / Export fills them in. Switch it off to leave the column blank to write in. Copies you make for buyers always have the column blank.
