Just one thing, line drawings, sharpening and Remove something

Chart just the thing you want, make a chart of just the lines, sharpen a small logo first, or paint out something you don’t want. Choose these tools with Own It and All Access.

Chart just one thing

In the photo wizard's Picture step, How much of the picture? has a third answer: Just one thing.

  • Point at the thing you want and click it. As you move the pointer, the thing under it is outlined first.
  • Click again to add a part it missed.
  • To take a part away, choose Take away or hold Alt as you click. On a touch screen, press and hold.
  • Or drag a box around it.

Everything else is left out of the chart. Around it decides what goes there instead: Nothing, or A color. Undo, Redo and Start over work click by click, and Done keeps what you picked.

While Just one thing is on, Remove the background is hidden, because they do the same job. With the paid plans, Find the subject picks the subject for you; Just one thing is for when you want to choose.

Select a thing in your chart

In the editor, the Select tool has Select by: Box · A thing. Choose A thing and click a thing in your chart to select it. Click again to add to it. Then use it like any other selection.

For a chart made from a photo, select the subject you want from that picture. For any other chart, select the area you want from the chart. The original photo never prints.

Line drawing

The Colors step asks What kind of chart? Full color uses every color in the picture. Line drawing makes just the lines, in one color.

  • Line thickness: 1, 2 or 3, counted in stitches, blocks or tiles, whichever your craft uses.
  • Line color: navy to start. Pick a swatch.
  • Behind the lines: Nothing, or A color (cream to start).

Line drawings work best on one clear subject. For a busy photo, pick just one thing first.

Sharpen small artwork

When the picture is a small logo, cartoon or clip art, the Picture step says: This looks like a small logo or drawing. Press Sharpen it and the chart gets cleaner edges and solid colors, or Not now to leave it. It only offers; it never sharpens on its own, and Undo takes it back.

If Sharpen it is not offered, continue with your photo as it is.

Remove something

On the Picture step, choose Remove something and paint over what you want gone — a date stamp, a stray cup, someone in the background. Undo takes back a stroke; Redo brings it back.

It works best on a plain or simple background; a busy one can leave a soft blur where the object was. It only fills in when you tell it to, and never on its own.
